Time’s Up: Why Small Non-EU Businesses Must Act Now on the EU Data Act

Image
The time for waiting is gone. On September 12, 2025, the European Union’s Data Act began to take effect. For the past few weeks I have been creating articles to help small businesses prepare for what was coming. I wanted to give them a head start before the deadlines arrived. Now that day has passed. The law is here. It does not only apply to large companies. It does not make exceptions for small firms outside of Europe. If you sell connected devices, run a cloud service, or rely on data-driven platforms that reach into the EU market, you are included. The clock has already run out, and there is no space left for delay. When the GDPR came into force in 2018, many small and mid-sized businesses believed it was only a problem for big technology companies. I saw many of them ignore the changes. Later they faced fines, lost clients, and damage to their reputation. The EU Data Act carries a similar weight, but it is focused on a different problem. GDPR was about the privacy of personal dat...

From Awareness to Action: Building a U.S. Data Compliance Roadmap

By Jim Pierce, Founder of Envoy of Efficiency Introduction: Why a Roadmap Matters When I wrote about the need for U.S. businesses to prioritize data compliance, my goal was to make the risks clear. Fines, lawsuits, and reputational damage are not abstract threats. They happen every day. But knowing the risks is only the first step. The next question is how a business turns awareness into action. In my work with businesses, I have found that leaders often understand the “why” of compliance but struggle with the “how.” They know they cannot ignore HIPAA, GLBA, COPPA, or the patchwork of state privacy laws. But they do not know where to begin. That is where a roadmap becomes critical. A roadmap gives structure. It breaks compliance into clear steps. It makes something overwhelming into something achievable. Step One: Inventory Your Data The first step is to understand what data you have. You cannot protect what you do not know exists. Every compliance failure I have seen star...

Data Compliance in the United States: Why Businesses Can’t Afford to Get It Wrong

By Jim Pierce, Founder of Envoy of Efficiency Introduction: Why This Matters to Me I have spent more than two decades working at the intersection of technology, operations, and compliance. I have seen the heavy costs that businesses pay when they do not treat compliance as a priority. In my early career, I managed contractor teams where electrical code enforcement was strict. Later, I moved into roles in financial services and healthcare IT. Today, I am pursuing a PhD focused on how artificial intelligence and automation can help businesses in regulated environments. These experiences taught me that compliance is not a paperwork exercise. It is survival. Businesses in the United States face a serious challenge. They must follow a complex system of laws that govern how data is collected, stored, and shared. These laws are not optional. They are enforced by federal agencies and state governments. The risks of ignoring them are enormous. Compliance must be part of business plann...
